One very good indication is landscaping. Newly constructed homes have an absence of expansive gardens. The trees are usually saplings. Fresh, empty flower beds may line the driveway or encircle the house. Look for tall, old trees, climbing ivy, and growth that seems just a little out-of-control. Flower beds should be settled without the rich, black earth of new beds. Older houses may have untrimmed walkways and weeds. This, of course, is not necessarily the case, but it is much more common in established houses than new ones, which may have younger owners and less garden area to maintain.

Examine the exterior of the house for elements that need replacement or repair. A house with new siding still may have windows that need updated-the siding may throw you off, but the windows prove that this house is definitely not new. Look at the roof-are shingles damaged or old? What about the driveway? Does it have cracks or appear to be faded? A modern driveway may be blacker and slicker than an old driveway and will be free of stains. Does hardware seem new and shiny or has it been exposed to weather for many years? Remember, older houses aren’t necessarily dilapidated; they may have been properly maintained over the decades. However, keeping your eye out for a few clues can help you determine if you are looking at a house that has been newly fabricated or is classic.

It’s not always the case, but it’s less likely that older people will inhabit newer houses. In older neighborhoods, the elderly will either stay in the homes they have lived in for years, or they will downsize to newer neighborhoods, retirement communities, or condominiums. A grand old Cadillac or Buick might be your indication that a house has age. The new houses in a typically older neighborhood may have children’s toys in the yard and shiny SUV’s parked in the driveway.

You can understand a lot about a house just by driving or walking by. Don’t’ underestimate what subtle things may tell you about the house. It’s easy to be fooled into thinking that a new house in an old neighborhood is like all the res-t-and it may or may not be for you. The key is to know what you are looking at so that you can determine whether to make an appointment with the real estate agent or continue your search elsewhere.

Aside from the general, “check your tires” and “change the oil” routine, there are far more important things to worry about…like what’s under the hood!

Every Week Or Every 250-Miles, Check:

• Oil level

Sounds easy enough right? Maybe for some but for the car care beginner it doesn’t and there are ways to check all of those listed above that you should know about.

Checking the oil level…

Using the dipstick checks the oil level, the dipstick is that long metal piece usually with a small ring on top to pull it out that sits near the motor and runs through a tube all the way down to the oil pan.

Contrary to what most say, the oil is supposed to be checked before you drive or about fifteen minutes after your car has been driven allowing the oil time to settle to gain an accurate read. If you check it too soon, some oil may still be in the upper part of the engine.

Pull out the dipstick, wipe the end of it clean and re-insert it and pull it back out. The dipstick is marked to show levels that tell you if you need to add oil or not. Look at the end of the dipstick, if the oil is above the add mark then you don’t need to add any oil but if it’s right on “add” or below, then add a quart and check again to make sure you don’t need more.

Checking the engine coolant…

Okay, there’s not really a recommended way to check engine coolant but there are some things you should know.

• Be careful with engine coolant liquids, avoid direct contact and put caps on tight.
• Don’t leave it around for children or animals to get into—it’s deadly.
• Check before you drive, never check when your engine is hot or even warm.
• Don’t check it when the engine is running.
• Coolant should be clear in appearance, if it’s brown, rusted or dirty looking then you should drain all of the coolant out, flush the system with water and refill.

Checking the brake level…

Checking the brake fluid is a fairly simple task and when you look under the hood you should see a cap clearly marked, “brake fluid”. Anytime you’re checking anything on your vehicle, if a cap is dirty just wipe it off before you open the cap to make sure you’re not unknowingly adding some harmful debris.

The brake fluid container or reservoir as mechanics call it, should have measuring lines on the side of it and most say “MAX”. The levels should be near the “MAX” mark but beware, if it’s empty you should take your car to someone who can bleed the brakes and re-do the system. If you notice that you brake fluid levels are dramatically lower each week when you check, check all of the hoses, all the connections and the brake lines. You may need to take your vehicle to a shop to have it properly checked.

Otherwise, if there’s no sign of problems simply fill to the recommended “MAX” line and you’re set.

Checking your tires…

While you may not need new tires every week, they still need to be checked up on to make sure that there are no foreign objects present that shouldn’t be there, to make sure that they are properly inflated and to watch for signs of wear.

Look around all the tires on your vehicle on sides, tops and bottoms. Look for tiny tears, dangling rubber, objects that may be lodged into your tire and look at the tread. To check the tread simply insert a penny with Abe facing you down into a tread line, if you can see all of Abe’s head then it’s time for some new tires.

Checking the windshield wiper fluid…

How many times have well all had something on our windshield and we didn’t have any fluid? It happens all too often and can easily be avoided by maintaining the proper levels. In milder climates it’s okay to use just water but in other climates when the temperature drops to freezing, you should use windshield washer antifreeze specifically designed for colder climates.

Warning: DO NOT use “cooling system” antifreeze because it will eat your paint!

Follow the manufacturers suggested use of any product you choose and fill to the recommended fill line. As with all of the compartments, the top should be clearly marked.

The subject at hand is that of the effects of electromagnetic fields on individual health. Weaving scenes of Camelot, the Lady of Shalott practices her artistic talent. Like an artist, she only sees the world the way she wants to see it, and is, in some way, protected by the fact that her inspiration comes to her through a mirror, instead of life observed first-hand. She has grown so accustomed to her lifestyle; she is not open to the idea that there is more to life than what the mirror shows: “There she weaveth steadily, /And little other care hath she.” Under these circumstances, the Lady isolates herself and can only be drawn out from her inability to actually see the world by some astoundingly inspiring, romantic figure.

The poem itself is really like a painting and a song, both in one, as the scenery rolls by in imaginative detail, written in musical verse. The verses are written so as to portray exactly what the Lady of Shalott might be weaving on her loom, as she sits in her tower all day and night, gazing into her crystal mirror that reflects, dimly, the world outside. “And moving thro’ a mirror clear/ That hangs before her all the year,/ Shadows of the world appear.” Yet, just as the moments where sound is heard during the poem signify some aspect of the outside world, the fact that the poem is musical sets the reader even closer to the action happening at that moment, for example, when a funeral with “music went to Camelot.”

For the most part, the description in the poem is strictly visual, rarely using any sense other than what is to be seen. The poem unfolds in this manner, panning across the fields and to Camelot, where “lilies blow” and where “Slide the heavy barges.” This is an intricate picture what an artist would see, what the Lady of Shalott would see, through her magic mirror, and weave on her loom. The poem makes reference to the Lady seeing the “highway near.” This is in direct correlation to the isolated feeling of the artist, and how she works absolutely in the visual, but not directly experiencing any of the objects. The mirror’s sights are called “magic.” An artist will often see things only her way, as well, with a distant sense of reality (somewhat “magical”), and through eyes unique only to herself, regardless of how other people see the world.

The use of color is a device that brings the reader closer to the poem and the artistic theme running through it. “Willows whiten” near the “gray walls,” where girls sport their red cloaks and pages are dressed in crimson. The mirror is blue, the galaxy golden, Lancelot is a “red-cross knight” under the “purple night.” And nearing the end of the poem, Tenneyson describes the woods as pale yellow, the Lady’s robe as snowy white, and the Lady herself as dead-pale. The poet, like the Lady, “weaves by night and day/A magic web with colors gay.” Tenneyson is presenting to the reader a verbal tapestry.

It is especially interesting to consider the points in the poem when sound comes into play. This only appears at crucial moments, or when the poet wishes to contrast the Lady’s silent world with that of reality. The reapers whisper about her as they work, in their real world, while the Lady weaves in her tower, imprisoned by her own narrow vision of the world. The warning that she gets in regards to her inability to look out her window comes in the form of a whisper. It as if the sound, representative of reality, brings her one step closer to her doom.

To look at the line, “I am half sick of shadows,” said/ The Lady of Shalott,” the fact of reality and the Lady’s world being two opposing forces, being symbolized by sound and sight respectively, becomes even more plausible. The Lady is sick of shadows, not of the silence, not of the loneliness, but of something that can be seen, shadows being dark and mere images rather than actual objects of substantiality. And she speaks this, tells the reader she is sick of the shadows, of her transient interpretation of the world. Because of this weariness of the strictly visual, self-fabricated environment, the world in which “She hath no loyal night and true,” she is more willing to disobey the sinister whisper and look out her window to gaze upon Lancelot as a real person.

Lancelot, the image that is glittering enough and impressive enough to coax her from her narrow visual space, is closely connected with the reality that has threatened to bring her down from the beginning. The bridle bells of his horse “rang merrily,” he carries a silver bugle, and his armor rung–all instruments of sound. Even Lancelot himself is singing. Each element of the knight is a powerful contradiction to the previously silent scenes and weavings, so he is the one to break the spell and shake off the Lady’s inability to grasp what she has heretofore ignored.

Finally, when she sees the world, not through her mirror, but with her own eyes, the un-defined curse settles upon her. Her weavings float out the window and the mirror shatters along with her safe, towered world. A second time she speaks: “The curse is come upon me.” These words are cried aloud, more forceful than her earlier utterings. Because she is completely immersed, now, in reality, having shed her fears of the curse, her voice punctuates the event, just as her other spoken line marked the beginning of the transformation from weaver to human masterpiece.

Instead of weaving, the Lady becomes active in her artistry. Because looking out onto the real world shatters the world she creates around herself with the magic mirror, to continue being an artist, she is forced to go outside. The world turns ugly for her, perhaps alluding to the way a person may be shocked at the realization of how the world really is. The woods are pale, the clouds are dark, and weather rainy. The Lady climbs into a boat in order to take her through the Camelot that she so fondly weaves in pictures. On the prow, she scrawls her name, “The Lady of Shalott,” signing it to the boat as an artist would sign her work.

Again, the event is highlighted by the element of sound. Tenneyson remarks upon the “noises of the night,” as the Lady sings a song while being carried by the stream in her little boat. She chants her mournful carol until her sight goes dim and her blood freezes. The melancholy aura about her death is a result of her grief over seeing the world outside her tower. She sings, as if it is her admission into the world only seen beforehand through her magic mirror.

It is at the end of the poem, when all is silent–the Lady has died and grown still, the people celebrating at Camelot quiet–that the Lady is finally noticed. But here she is still not seen as a person–Lancelot remarks upon her “lovely face” as one would remark upon a painting. The Lady herself has become a piece of artwork, a stiff corpse in a boat, signed by the artist, only to be admired for her beautiful appearance. Her artistic talent has taken on new meaning. It has been shared with the world without and has made a statement. However, whether the observers understand the meaning of the sight before them is left to be determined by the reader.

The course of the poem runs in a pattern that brings the reader in and out of the world in which the Lady of Shalott lives. There is clear distinction between the two, recognizable by the way the poem appeals to the senses of sight and sound. The Lady’s artwork is conducted in silence, and the world of sound shatters that just as it cracks her mirror. The world that she sees, one of much more than only the visual, one of sound, can not understand her aversion towards it, but yet only sees her as an object at the end of her life, not something more–much the way she sees the people in her mirror.

The brief is the panty staple, with a full-coverage back. The high-cut brief is considered old-fashioned by some (especially when they cover the navel), with full briefs being even less stylish by covering the rear down to the upper thigh. With today’s fashions, a low-rise brief, which hits low on the waist, is easy to find. These may also be called hipsters when they ride on the hip bones. If the panties do not have high arching leg-openings but are cut straight across, they are boy shorts. A tanga sits low on the hips and rises high at the leg. A bikini is essentially any panty that is in the style of the bottom of a two-piece swimsuit.

A thong is best described as a brief . . . without the back. Instead of a full coverage back, a thin piece of material connects the crotch fabric to the back band. A string or g-string thong typically has a thin piece of material or elastic for the waist band, with a triangle of material comprising the front of the panty.
