Choosing Bridesmaids Dresses

When planning your wedding, there are many decisions to be made and the job can seem overwhelming at times. Choosing bridesmaids’ dresses does not have to be a solitary decision. It is helpful to allow your attendants to participate in the selection. While you probably will not benefit by taking a whole slew of bridesmaids with on your first foray into shopping for dresses, inviting one or two along can provide additional viewpoints when needed. You may particularly want to consider including your honored attendant so she will feel more a part of the wedding planning process. Provide some guidelines at the outset if you already have definite ideas about the attire that you prefer such as color, fabric or length of dresses.

The process of dressing bridesmaids has come a long way over the years. It is not necessary that bridesmaids be identical from the tops of their hairstyles to the tips of their dyed-to-match shoes. Many brides prefer a more unique and individualistic look with attendants wearing similar but not identical attire. This approach is helpful when bridesmaids have varying body types and skin tones that would not all be flattered by the same dress. For, while the main purpose of the bridesmaids’ dresses is to complement the bridal attire, consideration should also be given to what looks good on the bridesmaids and to the comfort of the dresses since they will be worn for several hours.

Bridesmaids’ dresses come in a variety of styles such as fitted sheaths, A-line styles, empire waist dresses and two-piece skirt and top styles. The attendants’ attire is usually kept relatively simple so as not to detract from the bridal gown. Solid colors are the norm but two-tone dresses are often chosen as are floral patterns, especially in spring. Keep in mind that some dresses lend themselves to being worn later as a cocktail dress, which would be convenient for the bridesmaids but this should not be the primary factor in choosing a dress.

One popular approach to selecting bridesmaids’ dresses is for the bride to choose a dress style and then have each bridesmaid select the color she prefers within a certain range such as pastels or jewel tones. This can result in a beautifully coordinated and individualistic display. Or the bride may prefer several shades of the same basic color. Another option is to find a line of dresses that provides several style choices in the same fabric and let each attendant choose the style she will wear based on what looks best on her. Many brides simply specify a color and allow their attendants to choose their own attire. In this case, it is best to stipulate if you have preferences as to such things as length or whether the dresses may be strapless or not.

Start shopping for bridesmaids’ dresses several months in advance of the wedding. If the dresses will be ordered, you must allow time for them to be received and also time for alterations. Have bridesmaids provide their measurements before you order, especially if they live too far away to be able to try the dresses on in advance. There will need to be a fitting for each attendant after the dresses arrive. If a bridesmaid lives far away, she may need to find a seamstress in her area that can alter the dress if necessary.

There are many places to shop for bridesmaids’ dresses starting with bridal shops. Be aware that you may need an appointment at some shops. Also, check out formal wear shops and even the special occasion sections of large department stores. Shopping online is also an option. There are many internet sites that cater to brides and bridesmaids and you may find a wider selection of styles and colors within certain brands or lines that you have already seen in stores.

There are a few things to consider when choosing bridesmaids’ dresses. If the weather will be warm, stay away from thick, heavy fabrics such as velvet or thick satin for comfort’s sake. Light satins, shantung silks and chiffons work well in summer. For a cool evening wedding, if the dresses are particularly bare, consider a matching shawl for your attendants. Remember that if your attendants are happy, the whole affair will go more smoothly and be more relaxed and enjoyable for everyone.

Choosing bridesmaids’ dresses can be a fun bonding experience between you and your attendants. And knowing that the people you have chosen for this honor feel both attractive and comfortable in their attire will help you to relax and enjoy your special day.
