Benefits of GABA

By | Jul 23, 2010

GABA, or gamma-aminobutyric acid, is an amino acid that behaves like a neurotransmitter by helping ward off stress-related nerve impulses in the brain. Because GABA is produced in the body, you usually have all of this amino acid that is necessary for daily functioning. However, through age, poor diet, or other factors, levels of GABA can become depleted in the brain, resulting in depression, sleeplessness, and anxiety.

GABA has many uses due to its tranquilizing effect. Supplementation may be the answer to many problems because it reduces anxiety.

GABA supplements are often suggested to insomniacs. It is non-habit forming, unlike many drugs that promote sleep. Valerian may target GABA and increase its levels in the brain, so using it along with GABA supplements on a rotating basis may be an answer to consistently sleepless nights.

GABA may be able to improve mood by reducing anxiety levels. Xanax and Valium are addictive drugs, so GABA may be a safer substitute for those suffering from depression or anxiety disorders.

Many drugs targeting epilepsy and epileptic seizures actually increase GABA levels in the brain. Because of this, GABA is a worthy supplement for those suffering from epilepsy. Research has suggested that people with epilepsy can benefit most from GABA supplements by taking them over a period of time, allowing the amino acid levels to build up over time. GABA is not a replacement for traditional epilepsy drugs, but the GABA deficiency in the brain may actually be a partial trigger for seizures and may help to prevent them.

Other benefits of GABA may include: anti-aging effects, stimulation of the Humane Growth Hormone (which will aid in muscle growth and the burning of fat), and reduction in chronic pain levels.

Tips for GABA Usage
Look for GABA in the amino acid section of your health food or vitamin store. It can be found in tablet, powder, or capsule form, and the capsules can be opened into a healthy beverage of your choice if you prefer not to take tablets. GABA should be taken one hour before or two hours after a meal to promote the best absorption.

There is some evidence that suggests taking GABA with anti-anxiety medication or antidepressants could be dangerous. When combining GABA with these drugs, excessive sleepiness and/or addictive effects have been reported.

GABA has also been used by bodybuilders because of its increase in HGH. More muscle mass and a lean body may be more attainable with GABA, but conclusive research has not been undertaken to prove the safety of GABA for this use.
